Family is an American television drama series that aired on ABC from 1976 to 1980. The show followed the story of the Lawrences, a middle-class family from Pasadena, California – Kate and Doug (played by Sada Thompson and James Broderick), and their three children: Nancy (Meredith Baxter-Birney) a divorcee lawyer and mother, Willie, a high school drop-out and idealistic aspiring writer (played by Gary Frank), and free-spirited teenager Letitia, better known as “Buddy” (played by Kristy McNichol).

Throughout its run, the series dealt with a range of social issues – homosexuality, infidelity, bigotry and abortion, among others. In retrospect, Family can be viewed as a ground breaking drama for its time, paving the way for a host of intense, socially conscious television in the years to come.
